Inside Palermo Cathedral, there is a detail that many visitors miss: the floor sundial<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A slender brass strip, set into the marble, runs the length of the nave and looks like a decorative feature.<\/p>\n

The real surprise comes at midday.<\/p>\n

On the vault, at a height of almost twelve metres, there is a small gnomon hole<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From there, a beam of light streams in, illuminating the floor, \u2018tracing\u2019 the passage of time and indicating the signs of the zodiac.<\/p>\n

In the heart of the Parco della Favorita<\/strong>, the former hunting reserve of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, lies one of Europe\u2019s most eccentric residences.<\/p>\n

The Palazzina Cinese<\/strong>, with its pagoda roof and its \u201cexotic\u201d elegance, reinterpreted at the king\u2019s request by the Palermo-born architect Giuseppe Venanzio Marvuglia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The king\u2019s wish? To have some privacy and no unwanted servants around.<\/p>\n

For this reason, first and foremost, he wanted the kitchens to be separate<\/strong> from the main living area.<\/p>\n

And then, the most ingenious invention: the famous \u2018mathematical table\u2019, designed to serve lunch without the king having to meet the servants<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The table, already laid, was raised from the floor below by means of an innovative mechanism, using a system of ropes and pulleys.<\/p>\n

The dishes were served through four circular openings, after which they were taken back down to the kitchen without a waiter ever entering.<\/p>\n

All it took to \u201cplace an order\u201d was a set of bells and coloured ribbons, each one representing a different request. A little theatre of ingenuity and discretion<\/strong>, where even the service became\u2026 invisible.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

There are many interesting facts worth uncovering within the walls of the Grand Hotel Wagner<\/strong>. Did you know, for example, that the building was constructed in the early 20th century and that, after the war, it became home to the offices and costume department of the nearby Teatro Massimo<\/strong>?<\/p>\n
